Complete Guide to Choosing a Mens Fragrance

Are you tired of the ladies in your life having all of the nice-smelling products? Do you also want to turn heads with your pleasant scent as you walk through a crowd?

You might want to get a signature scent, or at least have a few men’s fragrance options to choose between for your nights out.

Don’t settle for cheap spray deodorant or the spritzers from the bath and body stores. You need to choose scents that suit you.

But how do you do that?

If this is all new to you, don’t worry, we’re here to help. Keep reading for our brief guide on choosing the best colognes for you.

Shop Around First

It’s tempting to go to your nearest department store and grab the first thing that smells good, but be patient.

There’s no shame in using the samples the way that they’re supposed to be used. You want to test the cologne before you commit to it, and you want to test a lot of them.

This is how you can find what you like instead of just saying “this smells fine” and calling it a day.

Try before you buy and know that it’s okay to leave and come back.

Narrow Down a Scent Category

It’s likely that you’ll be attracted to certain notes in a scent, and those notes fit into different categories.

It’s possible that you’ll like the citrus scents. They’re bright and sweet without being cloying. They have a summery feel.

Some more “masculine” scents are woodier, or more like leather. There may be a smokey note underneath.

Sometimes there are combinations of these things with a sweeter scent as the top note and a more earthy scent underneath, like in this Mont Blanc Legend Spirit fragrance.

Whichever you choose, make sure that it suits you. After you’ve shopped around, you’ll likely realize what scent category feels most “you”.

Pick the Right Concentration

Not all scents are alike. Different names signify different longevities and strengths, so pick one that will last just as long as you need it to. Keep in mind, though, that the stronger the concentration, the higher the cost.

In order from most to least concentrated, the most popular fragrances go like this:

  • Parfum (or perfume): At 20 to 30 percent fragrance, this can last all day.
  • Eau de Parfum: Will last up to 8 hours at 15 to 20 percent
  • Eau de Toilette: At up to 15 percent, this will dissipate in several hours
  • Eau de Cologne: Only up to five percent, this is light and short-lasting

A longer-lasting fragrance doesn’t mean that the fragrance is better. You may not like that scent, or you may have no interest in a fragrance that lasts all day.

Choose for your preference and lifestyle.
